Car racing

The keen eye of Team IDEC SPORT

Although everyone has an essential role within the team, this person is one of those who can save precious seconds, avoid unnecessary losses, and manage the race as calmly as possible. Working behind the scenes, every time the two LMP2 cars take to the track, with eyes glued to the screens and ultra-connected via radio and phone, the person in charge of sporting regulations provides all the information the technical staff needs. It’s all about knowing the rules inside out. And be careful, because you won’t get away with anything, as they say !

1/ How would you define your role?

I assist the Team Principal and the Team in general with everything related to the sporting regulations of the European Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I also act as a liaison between race control, the stewards, and the team. Of course, the team members involved are familiar with it: 130 pages to master. It evolves over time. But sometimes, in the heat of the race, extra help is welcome.

2/ Who do you interact with?

Via radio, I am connected with race control, and within the team with the two track engineers for #18 and #28, the Team Principal, the Technical Director, while also listening to the drivers.

With race control, the marshals, radio providers, and other teams, we use the “Discord” tool, which is a communication platform where we have group chats as well as private chats.

3/ How do you prepare?

At the beginning of each year, I start by forgetting the previous year’s rules before immersing myself in the new ones. I then create sheets summarizing the specific points of the current regulations, which I adjust as the season progresses. Before the season starts, we meet with the team for a specific briefing on the regulations, during which I discuss the key points and any new developments.

4/ On each circuit?

On race weekends, I take part in the drivers’ and Team Manager briefing, during which the Race Director goes through the rules. I then hold a debriefing in the pit to summarize the specific rules relating to the circuit and provide any updates. I also go over the essential points again, always with the aim of avoiding penalties.

5/ Why is your role essential?

This opportunity came my way four years ago. It’s quite exhilarating because I’m right at the heart of the race. For someone as passionate as I am, it’s magical. The goal is to avoid penalties at all costs. Mistakes can happen so quickly.

As you can imagine, it’s better to have two extra pairs of eyes. Between analysis, caution, and anticipation, this position is fully utilized within the Signes-based team. Can you guess who the Team Principal has delegated this task to within Team IDEC SPORT?
