Summer is here, the holidays have begun\u2026 and so have the famous summer assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don\u2019t worry\u2014there\u2019s no maths or spelling test this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At IDEC SPORT, we\u2019ve prepared something a little different: a quick guide to help you better understand endurance racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever watched a race and heard commentators talking about stints<\/strong>, drive throughs<\/strong>, Full Course Yellow<\/strong> or an undercut<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026without really knowing what they mean\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026this is your summer homework, motorsport edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a simple dictionary to help you follow a race like a true member of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Pole Position<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pole Position is the first place on the starting grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is awarded to the fastest driver during qualifying. In endurance racing, starting from the front often helps drivers avoid traffic during the opening laps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stint<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stint<\/strong> is the period during which a driver remains behind the wheel before returning to the pits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its length depends on several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Fuel consumption<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Tyre wear<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The team\u2019s race strategy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    A four-hour race is made up of several stints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Box<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When you hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBox, box!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    it simply means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cCome into the pits.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The driver enters the pit lane to refuel, change drivers, fit new tyres or make adjustments to the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Undercut<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An undercut<\/strong> is a strategic move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A team brings its car into the pits earlier than a rival in order to benefit from fresh tyres and faster lap times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The goal is to emerge ahead once both pit stops have been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Overcut<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The opposite strategy is called the overcut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Instead of stopping early, the team keeps the car on track for longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This can be effective when the track is clear or tyre performance remains strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Full Course Yellow (FCY)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Unlike a Safety Car period, every car immediately slows to a controlled speed across the entire circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The gaps between competitors are frozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Full Course Yellow allows marshals to intervene safely while minimising disruption to the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is one of the most important strategic moments in endurance racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Safety Car<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Safety Car leads the field while all competitors line up behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The gaps between cars are reduced, often creating new strategic opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Safety Car can completely change the outcome of a race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Drive Through<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The driver must drive through the pit lane\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2026without stopping. This penalty is usually given after a sporting infringement and can cost several valuable seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Stop & Go<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    More severe than a Drive Through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The driver must enter the pit lane, stop at the team\u2019s pit box for a specified amount of time, and only then rejoin the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Lollipop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Before modern traffic-light systems, a mechanic used a large paddle\u2014known as the lollipop<\/strong>\u2014to tell the driver when it was safe to leave the pit box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Although electronic lights have largely replaced it, the term is still widely used throughout the paddock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Traffic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Several categories race on track at the same time in endurance racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    LMP2 prototypes regularly overtake GT cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Managing traffic efficiently is one of the key skills required from every driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One poorly judged overtake can cost precious seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Tyre Degradation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tyre degradation refers to the gradual loss of tyre performance over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Engineers monitor it constantly to adapt the team\u2019s strategy throughout the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Flat Spot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When a driver locks a wheel under braking, one section of the tyre wears unevenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is known as a flat spot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The resulting vibrations can become severe enough to force an early tyre change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Lift & Coast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A fuel-saving technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The driver lifts off the throttle slightly before the braking zone, allowing the car to slow naturally and reducing fuel consumption with minimal lap time loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Track Limits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Every circuit defines the limits of the racing surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Repeatedly exceeding those limits can result in warnings and, eventually, penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why Does This Vocabulary Matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Endurance racing is about much more than outright speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Strategy, decisions made from the pit wall, tyre management, traffic and race neutralisations all play just as important a role as the drivers themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Understanding this vocabulary means understanding why a race can change in just a few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So the next time you hear over the team radio:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBox this lap. FCY. Watch traffic. We are trying the undercut.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2026you\u2019ll know exactly what\u2019s happening. And that\u2019s exactly what makes endurance racing so fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
